Location: Octoraro Treatment Plant
Position Summary: The Plant Operator is responsible for overseeing the production of potable water at the Octoraro Treatment Plant and its transmission to Village Green storage facilities. Key duties include:
Monitoring and adjusting processes and flows to ensure compliance with plant procedures and regulatory standards.
Performing routine chemical analyses and operational checks of mechanical and electrical equipment.
Maintaining accurate operational data logs.
Ensuring the plant operates efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
Process Monitoring and Control:
Conduct routine chemical analyses, such as pH, chlorine residual, alkalinity, turbidity, and fluoride measurements.
Perform microbiological tests on raw and finished water.
Adjust chemical feeds to achieve desired process outcomes.
Monitor and calibrate process analyzers.
Backwash filters and adjust raw water flows as necessary.
Operate pumps, remote valves, and pumping stations.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
Conduct operational checks of mechanical and electrical equipment.
Identify and report equipment or instrumentation malfunctions.
Perform routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning and minor repairs of chemical feed equipment.
Assist in unloading and transferring chemicals; monitor bulk chemical storage levels.
Data Logging and Reporting:
Maintain accurate operational data logs.
Document any malfunctioning equipment or instrumentation and inform the Production Supervisor.
Notify the Production Supervisor of any process upsets, power outages, or conditions that could impact water quality or delivery.
Safety and Compliance:
Ensure all activities adhere to plant procedures and regulatory requirements.
Follow emergency notification procedures for situations such as dam failure, floods, or chemical emergencies.
Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Residence within 30 minutes travel time of the plant, to be established within one year of hire.
Valid driver's license from the state of residence.
Ability to pass the Pennsylvania Waterworks Operators Exam at the level required to operate the Octoraro Water Treatment Plant within three years of hire.
Basic mechanical and electrical knowledge and aptitude.
Willingness to attend training seminars and continuing education courses.
Physical ability to operate manual valves, climb stairs and ladders, negotiate catwalks, bend and squat to inspect equipment, and read gauges and charts.
Ability to don a self-contained breathing apparatus and work in the presence of chlorine gas or anhydrous ammonia while wearing the apparatus.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, communicate effectively, and maintain written logs and records.
Proficiency in performing mathematical calculations for determining dosages and chemical consumption rates.
Ability to learn water treatment processes and perform operating duties in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
Preferred:
Valid Pennsylvania Waterworks Operators License Class A with Subclasses 1, 8, 10, 11.
Knowledge of the principles governing the control, operation, maintenance, and routine repair of electrically powered pumps.
Knowledge of water treatment plant processes and operations.
Familiarity with automated operations involving personal computers (PCs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and electronic instrumentation.
Work Schedule: Plant Operators work a rotating 12-hour shift schedule that provides 24/7 operational coverage of the plant. Shifts may include days, nights, weekdays, weekends, and holidays, as well as scheduled and unscheduled overtime. Shift start and stop times are either 7 AM or 7 PM.
